The Butchart Gardens endeavours to provide a pleasant and memorable experience for everyone. The following information offers guidance for those with accessibility needs to help them plan their visit.
Parking
All parking is free, and Accessible parking for those with disabilities is available. At certain times of year, all of these spots can be occupied, in which case our staff will park you as close to the entrance as possible. When leaving The Gardens, we have a designated passenger pick-up spot which relieves individuals from having to walk to the parking lot. Please ask one of our staff for further information.
Maps
Printed maps are available at our Admission Gate and in our Visitor Centre. They are also posted in many locations throughout the gardens. A wheelchair accessible route is designated on the maps. Gardens Map
Recreation Passes for People with Disabilities
Visitors who require a support person and have a Leisure Assistance Pass or an Access 2 Entertainment card pay full rate and their support person receives complimentary admission upon presentation of the Leisure Assistance pass or Access card. For those visiting from outside Greater Victoria, a comparable pass for the admission of their support person may be accepted at the Admission Gate.
Visually impaired individuals with a Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) card, or equivalent, are admitted free of charge.
Wheelchairs
Complimentary push wheelchairs are available with a refundable deposit. Please note that loaner wheelchairs do not have handbrakes. Wheelchairs are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Butchart Gardens is over 120 years old. Some pathways are therefore narrow, and as the gardens are built around an old limestone quarry with gardens stretching down to the shoreline, there are pathways with a steeper grade.
Paths with steeper grades are located as follows, and alternate routes are noted by signage and indicated on our visitor map:
- Between the Concert Lawn and the Rose Garden
- In the Rose Garden
- Between the Japanese Garden and the Star Pond
- Between the bus parking lot and the Seed & Gift Store
- Between the statue of Annabelle and the Rose Carousel
The Dining Room, Coffee Shop, Blue Poppy Restaurant, Seed & Gift Store, and Rose Carousel are all wheelchair accessible. The two locations in The Gardens that are not wheelchair or scooter accessible are The Mound and The Wharf.
Mobility Scooters
The Butchart Gardens does not have electric mobility scooters on site to rent. If you wish to rent a mobility scooter, please contact Motion directly at 1-888-222-2172.
Only motorized and standard wheelchairs are permitted. Four-wheeled motorized wheelchairs are more suitable on our pathways.
Strollers
Complimentary strollers are available with a refundable deposit, on a first-come, first-served basis from the Visitor Centre.
Pull wagons are not permitted as they cause congestion on our pathways.
Service Dogs
Only BC Certified Guide & Service dogs are permitted in our food service venues, Seed & Gift Store, on the carousel and on-board tour boats.
- As the Guide Dog & Service Dog Act of BC does not certify therapy, companion or emotional support dogs, we do not permit these dogs in our food service venues, Seed & Gift Store, carousel or tour boats.
Washrooms
All washroom facilities have a large stall for wheelchair access. Some entrances have electric push-button doors for easy entry.
All of the washrooms on the grounds are outfitted with baby changing stations for your convenience.
Parent Room
A parent room is located near the Rose Carousel building.
Luggage
We would be pleased to store your luggage at the Visitor Centre or the Turnstile entrance free of charge while you visit.
