Gallery Artist: Sharon Lennox

Step into summer with the return of The Gallery, our seasonal showcase celebrating the creativity of local BC artists. This year, we’re highlighting one of the many talented artists whose work will be featured throughout the season, offering you an early glimpse into the striking pieces waiting to be discovered.

To mark the opening weekend, The Gallery is pleased to present a special Artist Demonstration by Sharon Lennox on June 6 and June 7, from 11:00am to 4:00pm. Visitors are invited to observe her exceptional scratchboard technique, engage with the artist, and gain insight into her creative process.

Sharon Lennox

Sharon Lennox is an internationally recognized scratchboard artist based in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island, specializing in bird and wildlife artwork. As a Signature Member of the International Society of Scratchboard Artists (SSA) and a Senior Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists (SFCA), she has established herself as a master of one of the most demanding and detailed mediums in the fine art world.

A detailed illustration of a great horned owl (Bubo virginianus) perched on a wooden post. The owl is depicted with intricate feather patterns and a striking yellow eye. The background features a series of white and gray circular shapes, contrasting with the dark backdrop. The artwork is framed in a black frame and displayed on a table with blurred flowers in the background

Her work is celebrated for its profound realism and luminous depth, achieved through a meticulous subtractive technique using fine, precise tools, such as an x-acto knife, tattoo needles, or other detail instruments. By delicately scratching through the black ink of an Ampersand clayboard panel to reveal the white clay beneath, she “pulls” light from darkness. After the scratching is complete, layers of coloured ink washes, sometimes up to 25 layers are applied, unveiling the intricate textures of the wildlife. Adding an extra layer of personal connection to her work, each painting is meticulously created using her own original photography as the reference point, allowing her to capture the true spirit of her subjects.

Four greeting cards featuring illustrations of birds are displayed on a glass table. The cards depict a red-headed woodpecker, a hawk, and a bird that appears to be a type of owl, all set against a blurred background of colorful flowers and greenery. The cards are propped up on pieces of wood

A recipient of the 2019 SSA International Artist Award and numerous accolades at juried shows, Sharon continues to push the boundaries of scratchboard. Her striking pieces are collected locally, across Canada, and in private and public collections worldwide.

The Gallery will showcase these magnificent scratchboard paintings and stock cards featuring Sharon’s exceptional artwork. Her pieces are also on display in the Coffee Shop.

The Gallery will be open Monday, June 1, to Monday, September 7, from 11:00am to 4:00pm. As an extension of our Seed & Gift Store, tucked just behind the Visitor Information Centre, The Gallery brings together thoughtfully curated collections that reflect the artistry and spirit of our community. We invite you to stop in during your summer visit and explore the works on display.
